Irwindale Adds Three New Divisions to 2013 Oval Track Schedule

"Irwindale has expanded its great 2013 line up of racing events to include three, highly competitive 'spec'* classes, all guaranteed to be crowd-pleasers as well as the place where many great new drivers will be making their marks on our oval track stage," said Irwindale Event Center GM, Bob Klein as he announced that fifteen more individual race events had been added to the track's 2013 NASCAR calendar, even before the racing season started. They are:

The Bandoleros (driven by youngsters age 8 to 16) will contest a series of eight races at Irwindale in 2013 with four "dual-night" appearances at the Speedway on the following Friday and Saturday nights: April 26/27, June 14/15, October 4/5, and October 18/19.

"Bandos", as everyone calls them, are full-bodied, steel-tube-framed, mini-race cars and are powered by a 570cc / 30-horsepower Briggs and Stratton "Vanguard" engine that employees a centrifugal clutch to transmit power to the rear wheels. Racing on Irwindale's tricky inner third mile oval, these young drivers always put on a great show, every race, every lap.

The S2 division, set up as the step between Karts or Legends Cars and full-size stock cars. In fact the name itself is short for "Step 2". The concept was to use the most economical parts and establish rules that work to keep costs reasonable. These are full size race cars with a lot of the same ideas that have made divisions like the Legends Cars so successful nationwide. These cars feature a full tube frame, fiberglass bodies, and factory-sealed 350-horsepower V-8 engines. The S2's are a touring division and fans will see them at Irwindale twice this season: on April 27 and again on July 20.

The Southwest Tour Trucks ("SWTT") will compete in five events at Irwindale this season: May 4, August 31, September 21, September 28, and October 19. The Southwest trucks combine a much-modified GM "metric" chassis with a tube frame upper section, they cover that frame with a replica pickup truck body rendered in fiberglass, and power the machine with a closely controlled V-8 engine.

Please Note: With the establishment of a separate set of events, SWTT are no longer one of the truck divisions that will compete at Irwindale in the new combined "Irwindale Race Trucks" category.

... Great live and local NASCAR Racing roars back to Irwindale Saturday on night April 6 and fans are invited to come out early on March 16th and 30th to get a first look at the 2013 racing season. Open practice will be open to the public from 11am to 4pm. Parking and admission will be free, and snack bar service will be available.

*The term "spec" means that every aspect of every racing machine in that division is identical: chassis, body, engine, wheels, tires ... everything. The only thing that makes these machines (look) different is their paint scheme; and the only thing that makes them better on the race track is preparation and driving skill. When the equipment is identical and very closely-controlled, as in these three divisions, a stand-out driver is quite easy to spot!
