Monterey Car Week: A Journey

Monterey CA, Aug 2014 - Monterey Car Week is a magnet that draws human kind from all corners. There is hardly a better visual setting than down by the sea. While some may enjoy the luxury of just showing up and looking fabulous, many arrive with business at hand and cars in tow. All around it’s a major transportation and logistics endeavor getting all the people and parts to the right places.

Given busy month schedules fore and aft Car Crazy Week, getting to Monterey Bay is an afterthought for some - the necessary evil part. It’s very proper to drive your old ride from far and wide – you shall see license plates on classics from across America and visitors from everywhere else. We make the 5 hour pilgrimage every year from LA; safe and comfy in the old Lexus but envying the experience of many classic cars we’re speeding past in daylight. This does not happen when travelling late at night to make best use of time, the day job, and open roads – good or bad.

If you are in a hurry, it’s surely bad luck or silly thinking to expect the coast road to carry you along at speed required. But you just have to try it when you can. It’s surely fun to pound the curvy open stretches but you know the road ahead is soon filled at someone else’s speed. So rebuffed, you don’t really feel bad about losing your place in a line that isn’t going anywhere. Can we stop in time for that turnout without hurting anyone else? There might be something to look at. In the case of southern California coastline, the answer is: there will always be something to look at. It’s often all right to take the time to stop and let the senses pick up what is being presented out there. The journey can be the best part if you take the chance.
